Reassurance Scan
Reassurance scans are performed at any stage after 12 weeks of pregnancy. The scan is for women who are concerned about their pregnancy at this stage for any reason. During this scan we measure the baby's head, abdomen and and legs We also look at how the baby is moving, the amount of amniotic fluid, and where the placenta is. It is possible to tell the sex of your baby from this scan after 16 weeks.
Pregnant woman are offered two routine ultrasound scans: One at approximately 12 weeks and the other at 20 weeks of pregnancy. A reassurance scan is not usually offered on the NHS unless:
A reassurance is performed any time after 12 weeks of pregnancy. The position of the baby and placenta are determined as well as the size of the head in two diameters, the size of the tummy and the length of the upper leg are measured. These are plotted on an expected size chart. The volume of amniotic fluid is assessed. The placenta is visualised.
Depending on the number of weeks (after 16 weeks) and the fetal position all major organs and structures are visualized.
Yes, a consultant will be available to talk to if you have additional questions, concerns or if an abnormality was detected. Further tests including the Harmony Test or invasive tests such as a CVS or Amniocentesis can also be explained in depth.
We offer morning, afternoon and occasionally evening appointments during the week as well as Saturday appointments. We have a wide range of availability therefore short notice appointments can be easily arranged.
