How to Involve Older Siblings During Pregnancy

Becoming an older brother or sister can be tough, particularly for first children who have had their parents all to themselves. It is therefore important to get older children involved during the pregnancy so that they will be ready to welcome the new addition to the family.

Help Your Child to Understand What’s Happening

Talking about pregnancy is a good way to introduce older siblings to the idea of a new brother or sister, although it can seem like a long wait to younger children:

  • Talk about what is happening to your body in a way that is appropriate for your child’s age. Younger children can simply be told that a baby is growing in Mummy’s tummy, but older ones may be ready to find out more about where babies come from.
  • Let your child feel the bump when baby is moving around and tell them that the baby is trying to say hello to them.
  • Talk about the baby with your child and encourage them to talk to the baby bump too. Babies can hear from inside the womb from around 23 weeks

Get Involved Through the Ultrasound Scans

Children often find it easier to imagine a new baby when they can see him or her:

  • Share the ultrasound pictures and videos with your child. Seeing what the baby looks like can make it seem more real to them.
  • If your children are old enough, you might want to bring them along to the scan appointment so they can see the pictures appearing on the screen. However, this could be a bit tiring for younger children as they will have to wait while all the health checks are being done.

Prepare For a Younger Sibling

It’s impossible to prepare a child completely for the reality of a new sibling, but there are a few things you can do to show them what it will be like:

  • Lots of children’s books and TV programmes feature new babies and families with little brothers or sisters.
  • Try to spend some time around other young babies before the birth.
  • Choose a present together to give to the new baby and make sure that you have one prepared for the baby to give to its older sibling
