Internal Scans

What Happens During an Internal Scan

If you are having an internal scan, the ultrasound probe will need to be inserted into your vagina. We use a specially designed probe for this, which is very small and slim in order to minimise any discomfort.

  • You will need to remove any clothing from the lower half of your body. We’ll provide a cover to help you feel more comfortable.
  • We’ll ask you to lie down on your back or side and raise your knees up towards your chest.
  • The ultrasound probe will then be gently inserted into your vagina. The probe has a sterile cover and we’ll use lubricating gel to ensure it moves smoothly.
  • You may feel a bit uncomfortable, but a trans-vaginal scan should not be painful at all. It should all be over in just 10 to 15 minutes.

It is best to empty your bladder just before having an internal ultrasound. You can do this when you arrive at the clinic.

Can You Have an Internal Scan on Your Period?

It is possible for us to perform an internal ultrasound when you have your period. You’ll just need to remove your tampon, if you’re using one. However, some kinds of scans should only be performed at certain times during your cycle. We can advise you on the best time for your scan when you make the appointment.
