Prepare for labour

Preparing for labour is one of the most important tasks on your pregnancy to do list. You need to know what will happen to your body during and after labour. You’ll also have lots of choices to make about the way you want to give birth.

There are a variety of the birth preparation classes available. The National Health Service offers free classes but you can have private classes individually or in a group. There are number of private providers classes including the National Child Birth Trust. Information about these classes can be found on the internet. The class will tell you everything you need to know about pregnancy and labour. You’ll learn about all your options for giving birth and what to expect in the first few days.

They will explain what to expect during labour, including:

  • How to tell when you are going into labour
  • When to contact your midwife or head to the hospital
  • What will happen during each of the three stages of labour
  • What will happen right after your baby is born

You will also need to think about:

  • Where you want to give birth
  • Whether to have a planned Caesarean section and what to expect in an emergency
  • What interventions we might need to use during the birth
  • What kinds of pain relief you might want to try
  • What equipment you want to have available, such as a pool for a water birth
  • Who you want to be with you during labour

We can help you to consider all of your options and put them together into a birth plan. However, it’s important to realise that your birth plan can change. Sometimes it will be necessary to intervene to keep you and your baby safe. Sometimes you will decide that you want to do things differently. The important thing is to know all of your options so that you understand what is happening and why.
