Prepare for Ultrasound Scan

If you are having an external or trans-abdominal ultrasound scan:

  • Abdominal scans work best when you have a moderately full bladder. We recommend that you have something to drink about an hour before the appointment and then try to avoiding emptying your bladder until after the scan.
  • You won’t need to undress, but you should wear clothes that can easily be pulled away from your abdomen so that the ultrasound probe can move across your skin.

If you are having an internal or trans-vaginal ultrasound scan:

  • It’s best to empty your bladder just before the scan. You can do this at the clinic when you arrive for your appointment.
  • You will need to undress from the waist down, so it’s best to wear a separate top and bottom to the clinic. If you wear a loose dress or skirt, you may be able to pull this up over your hips instead.
  • We can perform trans-vaginal scans during your period, but some scans such as the endometrial ultrasound should be performed at particular points in your menstrual cycle. We can advise you on the best time for your scan when you book the appointment.

You might need to make some additional preparations for certain kinds of ultrasound scans. For example, if you are currently undergoing fertility treatment, your doctor may have prescribed some medication for you to take. If there are any additional requirements, we will discuss them with you before the scan.
