Risks of Ultrasound Scans

Large numbers of people have been having ultrasound scans for many years, and there are no known risks.

  • There are no known side effects during or after the scan.
  • There are no long term risks of having an ultrasound.
  • The scan is just as safe for an unborn baby as for an adult.

As well as being very safe, having an ultrasound is painless. All you’ll feel is a bit of pressure as the ultrasound probe passes across your skin or some slight discomfort if you need to have an internal scan

Latex Allergies

The only potential risk is with the sterile cover used on the ultrasound probe during internal scans. Make sure that you tell us if you have a latex allergy so that we can ensure the cover we use is latex free.

Other Issues to Consider

Although the scan itself is very safe, it is always important to consider what you might find out when you have a medical test. You could learn something significant about your health or the health of your unborn child when you have an ultrasound scan. We can help you to understand what the test is for and what it can tell you before you have the scan. We can also help you to understand your results afterwards.
