Most women will have at least a couple of ultrasound scans during their pregnancy, but depending on the situation they may have one or more other tests, either before conception or during pregnancy. Some of the most common tests include pre-conception ultrasounds, and blood tests carried out for screening purposes.
These scans are carried out prior to conception, for women who are having fertility treatments or are having trouble conceiving. They include the endometrial scan, which examines the endometrium of the uterus, and the follicular-tracking scan, which looks at egg maturation. In either case, an abnormal scan result might indicate a reason for fertility problems.
In pregnancy, a range of blood tests can be used to screen for certain kinds of chromosomal abnormalities. These tests can be carried out from around week 10 onwards, and can detect Down’s syndrome, Edwards syndrome, and Patau’s syndrome, as well as certain sex chromosome abnormalities. Known as non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), these tests are called the Harmony test, Panorama test, and SAFE test.
For parents whose NIPT shows a high probability for a chromosomal abnormality, they have the option to confirm a diagnosis with an amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS). Both of these tests involve the removal of liquid or tissue from the uterus via a long ultrasound-guided needle. However, these tests are somewhat invasive and carry a miscarriage risk of approximately 1%.
Parents who choose to have one of these tests do so for a variety of reasons. In some cases, it’s due to a family history of genetic disorders, and the desire to confirm whether the baby is affected. Some parents want to have as much information as possible about the pregnancy so that they can prepare to support a child with special needs. For others, it’s about having the information they need to decide whether or not having the child is the right choice.
At The Birth Company we offer a full range of prenatal and antenatal ultrasound scans, so when you need a London private scan we're the ones to call! We also provide non-invasive prenatal testing, including the Harmony test, Panorama test, and SAFE test. All the staff were really nice to us . At the reception, the girls were smiling and welcoming. We were late and they managed to give us another quick appointment without waiting. The Lady who did a Scan was really good and professional. I was able to ask all questions I wanted and she was really reassuring.
