When should I have scan during pregnancy?

We may also recommend additional scans if there are any complications. For example, you will probably need more frequent scans if you are expecting more than one baby, you are an older mother, or you have a history of problems during pregnancy.

In addition to your scheduled scans, you might also need extra scans if you experience any unusual symptoms such as bleeding. We’ll arrange an urgent appointment to check on your baby if you’re worried about anything.

You don’t need to have a medical reason to have another ultrasound. You can also choose to have additional scans if you would like us to check on your baby more often. You might want to find out if you’re expecting a boy or girl before the 20 weeks scan or to arrange a 4D ultrasound so that you can see your baby’s face in colour.

Different types of scans are available at different stages. You may have some or all of the following scans:

  • Viability Scan: an early scan available from 6 weeks
  • Nuchal Translucency Scan: the routine 12 weeks scan, usually done between 12 and 14 weeks
  • Reassurance Scan: an extra scan usually performed between 14 and 24 weeks, between routine scans
  • Sexing Scan: we should be able to tell if your baby is a boy or girl from 16 weeks
  • Anomaly Scan: the routine 20 week scan, usually done between 20 and 22 weeks
  • Cervical Scan: a scan to check your cervix if you’re at risk of premature birth. It can be performed from 16 weeks, but is usually done usually sequentially at 17 and 21 weeks,
  • Wellbeing Scan: an extra scan performed after 24 weeks, between the routine scan and the birth
  • 4D Scan: a colour scan of your baby that works best between 26 and 32 weeks
