The Harmony test is a popular choice for NIPT you may be wondering whether it is suitable for you, especially if there are any special circumstances around your pregnancy. The Harmony test is suitable for most pregnancies.
You can have the Harmony test if you are expecting more than one baby, whether you’re having identical or non-identical twins. However, the sensitivity of the Harmony test is reduced in multiple pregnancies. We’ll always perform an ultrasound scan before NIPT to confirm how many babies you’re expecting. If we discover that you’re expecting twins then you may want to consider having the Panorama test for your NIPT as it has better sensitivity for multiple pregnancies.
If you’re expecting more than two babies then you’ll need to discuss the screening options with us as we are unable to perform an NIPT.
You may want to look at alternative screening such as the Nuchal Translucency scan in order to assess the likelihood of chromosomal conditions such as Downs Syndrome, Pataus Syndrome and Edwards Syndrome for each of the babies.
The Harmony test can be performed whether you conceived your baby naturally or with the help of fertility treatments such as IVF. It won’t make any difference to the test results or the way that NIPT is performed.
It is also possible to have the Harmony test if you are using:
Since NIPT is looking at the fetal-placental DNA that is circulating in the pregnant woman’s bloodstream, it doesn’t matter whether she is genetically related to the baby she is carrying. You can still have NIPT if you are having a baby using a donated egg or embryo. You can also ask your surrogate to have the test during the pregnancy. The NIPT results will be just as reliable however the baby was conceived.
The NIPT is performed at any gestation from 10 weeks of pregnancy onwards. The test is suitable for both higher and lower probability mothers. We recommend having an NIPT if you are anxious about your baby having a chromosomal condition such as Downs, Edwards or Patau's syndrome. Women who may need it are those that are older (particularly over 40 years), have already had a chromosomal condition pregnancy or who are at particular risk of miscarriage should they have an amniocentesis or chorionic villous sample. If you’re not sure whether NIPT is right for you or need help deciding which type of NIPT to have, then you can always ask us for more advice.

All the staff were really nice to us . At the reception, the girls were smiling and welcoming. We were late and they managed to give us another quick appointment without waiting. The Lady who did a Scan was really good and professional. I was able to ask all questions I wanted and she was really reassuring.
