3D vs 4D Ultrasound: What’s the Difference and Which Should You Choose?

You have probably come across those adorable ultrasound images where you can clearly see a baby’s tiny nose, lips, and even chubby cheeks, that is a 3D ultrasound. But have you ever heard of 4D ultrasound and wondered what makes it different?

The answer is actually quite simple…

-3D ultrasound gives you a still three-dimensional image of your baby. It shows the shape and features in much more detail than a regular 2D scan.
-4D ultrasound adds the fourth dimension: time, that means you get to see your baby moving in real-time, like a little video. You might catch them yawning, stretching, or even sucking their thumb!

When should I book a 3D and 4D Ultrasound Scan?

These scans usually take place later in pregnancy, typically between 26 and 32 weeks. By this stage, your baby has developed enough fat under their skin to make those sweet facial features more visible on the scan.

What Happens If My Baby’s Face Isn’t Visible During a 3D/4D Ultrasound?

It’s good to know that the clarity of 3D and 4D images depends a lot on your baby’s position. If your little one is facing your back, curled up, or hiding behind hands or feet (cheeky, but totally normal!), we might not get a clear view right away. In some cases, we’ll ask you to move around a bit or even reschedule for another day when baby’s in a better pose for their photo shoot.

Why Choose a 3D or 4D Scan?

While these scans aren’t part of routine medical care, they offer a special chance to bond with your baby and create keepsake images you’ll treasure. When everything lines up just right, the results can be truly magical.

Getting Ready for Your Scan

These scans are a lovely way to see your baby’s face before birth and create memories you’ll cherish. Whether it’s your first glimpse of a little smile or a yawn, it’s a moment many parents treasure.
